Professional Health Studies BA/BSc (Hons) Top-Up
The aim of the Professional Health Studies BA/BSc (Hons) Top-Up course is to provide you with a wide variety of insights into what constitutes health and wellbeing such that you will be able to critically appraise health related research and policy. This programme will enable you to build a career in health and social care in roles such as project manager, patient advice and service officer and senior clinical support worker. It aims to enhance your professional career, helping you develop greater critical awareness of the factors that need to be addressed in the workplace to improve the health and wellbeing of your clients/ patients/residents.
Within your workplace you will be enabled to demonstrate how this critical awareness of health can have a positive impact on improving and promoting people’s health. The course will provide you with the opportunity to gain a wider understanding of the impact of poor health on local, national and international economies and you will be digitally literate in order to help you access and interpret relevant data and information.
This Professional Health Studies BA/BSc (Hons) Top-Up course is suitable for you if you are a qualified nurse or other professional, have completed a UK-credited diploma programme (or equivalent) and want to (Top-Up) to an honours degree. It is also suitable if you have studied a foundation degree in a health and social care related subject and wish to continue your studies to bachelor level. The course also provides an excellent foundation for students to progress to masters-level study.
By the end of the course you will be able to critically analyse factors that affect health and wellbeing. You will also have gained an evidence-based understanding of health as a contested concept and gained academic skills to aid your development within your own specialist area.
The Professional Health Studies BA/BSc (Hons) Top-Up course will give you an in depth insight into, and an understanding of, health and healthcare provision from different perspectives including that of gender, culture and from a world-wide viewpoint.
You will develop skills that will help you to retrieve, interpret and use data, information and evidence to underpin your understanding of health and its impact on people’s lives.
Your previous views on health will be used as the starting point to examine and explore the meaning of health for individuals and communities in order to evaluate what health is in a variety of contexts. You will consider many issues relevant to health, including promoting healthy lifestyles, social determinants of health, health inequalities, and global perspectives on health.

Entry Requirements
- The (Top-Up) course is designed for applicants holding a Level 5 qualification such as a Higher National Diploma, or other equivalents or have completed the second year of a relevant and comparable degree;
- Applicants must have a relevant HND or a foundation degree with 240 credits in any Business and/or Management related areas;
- Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language;
- Qualifications are checked before enrolment by the institution where you’ll apply;
- Students must bring their original diploma when coming for registration;
